That and the fact, that we know our glass, its strengths and weaknesses, e.g. how prone it is to flare, where in the frame the distorsion is strongest etc.
The SMC-A 2.8/24 mm has apparently been designed to keep the strongest barrel distorsion somewhat away from the borders on a 35 mm camera. Put it on an APS-C body and it will be right at the edges and hence much more conspicuous. All those little things that you'd have to find out again with a new system.
