Some of you may remember my announcement of a hands-on astrolabe study day late
last year. That could not go ahead for medical reasons, and was rescheduled to
8 February.
This is just to note that, as of now, there are only 3 tickets left for this
special event, so anyone within easy reach of Oxford, UK who'd like to come
should act quickly.
The study day is linked to an exhibition I have curated at the Oxford Centre
for Islamic Studies ("Lines of Faith: Astronomy and the Art of the Astrolabe in
the Islamic World"). The afternoon event will include a visit to the (normally
private) exhibition space and a demonstration and practical session on using
the instrument to tell the time. A standout feature will be the opportunity for
hands-on metalwork, led by Dr Taha Yasin Arslan of Istanbul Medeniyet
University. Participants will work with astrolabe blanks and part-made brass
elements, wielding fret saws, files, hammers and rivets.
