Hello sundial list
Those within easy reach of Oxford, UK may like to know about an upcoming event
that I am organising at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies.
On Saturday 9th November we will have an astrolabe study day, linked to an
exhibition I have curated there ("Lines of Faith: Astronomy and the Art of the
Astrolabe in the Islamic World"). This afternoon event will include a visit to
the (normally private) exhibition space and a demonstration and practical
session on using the instrument to tell the time. A standout feature will be
the opportunity for hands-on metalwork, led by Dr Taha Yasin Arslan of Istanbul
Medeniyet University. Participants will work with astrolabe blanks and
part-made brass elements, wielding fret saws, files, hammers and rivets.
